The development of the modern prison has been documented by Foucault as an instrument for bodily discipline. Another aspect of prisons, especially that of
solitary confinement, is the isolation of individuals from collective groups. This act is meant to prevent any type of collective resistance that can form when an individual mind strives to achieve autonomy. This struggle for autonomy does not occur in a vacuum, and requires some sort of solidarity with others to fight against widespread structures that systematically condition or control human life.
