Freedom, also defined as liberty, is an important factor in American culture. But the idea of cognitive liberty, where an individual has control over one's own mind and what it experiences, is not as strongly emphasized. This type of liberty can include the ability to achieve heightened states of consciousness that has usually been achieved through many years of meditation. Technology has caught up to such a degree as to allow people to provoke such states very quickly and easily. This is a perfect example of cognitive liberty that is also a fulfillment of a larger project of social liberty.
